Electric vehicle traction motors require between 1 and 2 kg of NdFeB per kW of power — a typical EV uses 2 to 5 kg of magnets. They are also widely used in electric power steering (EPS) and auxiliary micromotors.
In electric motorcycles, NdFeB magnets in hub motors provide high torque density in compact, lightweight designs.
Direct-drive permanent magnet generators eliminate the gearbox, reducing nacelle weight by 20 to 30 tonnes. A 10 MW offshore turbine can contain up to 2 tonnes of NdFeB magnets.
